What is CASPer®?

CASPer® is an online based situational judgement test that evaluates interpersonal skills. The evaluation presents a series of twelve hypothetical scenarios, asking applicants to write what they would do in the given scenario and why they would do it.

Many medical schools in both Canada and the United States have adopted CASPer® as an application requirement because the test demonstrates behavioural tendencies and people skills, both being critical markers in a hopeful health care practitioner.

How is CASPer® formatted?

Time

The CASPer® test takes approximately 90 minutes, which includes the introduction, about 65 minutes of questions, and an optional 10-minute break at the halfway point (after six sections).

Format

The evaluation includes a series of 12 scenarios that could be presented as either a video or a written text. Each scenario will be accompanied by 3 open-response questions and you will have 5 minutes to respond.

How is CASPer® Scored?

Each section of the test is scored by a unique rater from different professions. Raters are assigned to a particular scenario and provided with relevant instructions and background knowledge about the topic at hand. Once prepared, raters are served responses to their assigned scenario from multiple different applicants to rate. It’s important to note that no rater will ever score an applicant more than once. Spelling and grammar mistakes are ignored during the marking process.

An applicant’s total score will be made through the 12 unique rater impressions.

Disclaimer: As the applicant, you will never actually see your score but it will be sent to all the medical schools you listed. The score will be used uniquely by each medical school during their selection processes.

UPDATE: CASPer quartile scores are now made available to applicants starting in the 2021-2022 cycle.

How to Prepare for CASPer®

  1. Test the CASPer® software on your computer using the System Check diagnostic found in your CASPer® account at least 3 days prior to your test date.

  2. Use the free practice test offered on the CASPer® website. This will allow you to familiarize yourself with the formatting.

  3. Situational judgment tests like CASPer® are very similar in principle to MMI-style medical school interviews, so MMI practice resources can be valuable.

  4. Acquaint yourself on topics like ethical decision making, medical ethics, problem-solving strategies, and mediation.
